Small Business Round Table

Vancouver Island/Coast region spans Vancouver Island and encompasses some of the southern shoreline including Powell River to to Bella Bella and Bella Coola.

Greater Victoria's 377,000 residents make up almost half of the region's 817,000 people. Victoria's economy is anchored by the provincial government and Canada's Pacific Naval Fleet and a healthy innovation sector and high value construction. North of the Capital Region, the economy is driven by tourism, aquaculture and forestry.

The Mainland/Southwest includes Greater Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and the Sunshine Coast, and stretches north to include Whistler, Pemberton and Lillooet. It is home to 3 million people or 62% of the provincial population.

Vancouver is the financial and business capital of B.C. with many businesses headquartered in the region. Major sectors include trade and financial services, transportation, education, secondary manufacturing, tourism and agriculture.

Northwest B.C. is sparsely populated with 99,000 people or 2% of the provincial population. Terrace and Kitimat are the major centres and economic activity centres around transportation and logistics, mining and energy.

Smithers, Vanderhoof and Houston are the largest centres in the Nechako Region. Forestry, mining, agriculture are the primary sectors with a growing tourism industry centred around Indigenous cultures and outdoor wilderness and recreation.

The Cariboo covers much of the northern interior of the province and is home to 153.500 people or 3% of the provincial population. It includes Prince George which acts as a major service center for the northern half of the province, and the town of Barkerville - the capital of the Cariboo Gold Rush of the mid 1800’s.

The key economic sectors include forestry and mining.

Thompson Okanagan in B.C.’s central interior lies between the Cascade and Monashee mountains and boarders Alberta and Washington. The region’s 564,000 people represent 11.7% of B.C.’s population, making it the third most populous region in the province.

The rising cost of living in Metro Vancouver has led to population growth and significant construction in the population centres of Kelowna, Kamloops and Vernon. Tourism, agriculture, mining, forestry and manufacturing are important industries.

The Kootenay's are in the southeast corner of the province bordering Alberta and the US. The region's 149,000 residents are concentrated in Cranbrook, Nelson and Castlegar with Trail and Grand Forks acting as economic hubs.

Long reliant on natural resources sectors, agriculture and tourism, the technology sector has been growing thanks to improved broadband and an expanded focus on tech development by a number of communities.

The Northeast region borders Alberta and the Yukon and is part of the Peace River Basin. It is separated from the northwestern part of the province by the Rocky Mountain Trench.

The region is home to 68,000 people - 1% of the provincial population – who are concentrated in Fort St. John and Dawson Creek. The key industries include oil, gas, mining, forestry and agriculture.
